| 22 questions//redone for 200822 deep questions that will really tell you something. ----Not stupid questions like "How Old Are You?"----
1. What is more difficult for you, looking into someones eyes when you are telling them how you feel, or looking into someones eyes when they are telling you how they feel?
to be honest, both. i'm bad with eye contact. but the first one is harder. because i've gotten used to people spilling stuff out to me.
2. Think of the last time you were REALLY angry. Why were you angry?
really angry? that's not a common thing. i don't get angry. i'd have to say a couple months ago, though. one of my best friends was played. and i don't fly with stuff like that. i hate when people mess with the people who are close to me.
3. You are on a flight from Honolulu to Chicago non-stop. There is a fire in the back of the plane. You get enough time to make ONE phone call. Who would you call?
my mom. hands down.
4. You are at the doctor's office and she has just informed you that you have approximately one month to live. (1) Do you tell anyone/everyone you are going to die? (2) What do you do with your remaining days? (3) Would you be afraid?
okay, lets tackle this question one at a time.
(1)--i wouldn't tell everyone. i'd tell a small group of people. i'm pretty sure they know who they are. i wouldn't want everyone to know, because i wouldn't want the attention.
(2)--this one's quite easy. ROADTRIP!!!! seriously. my last days would be spent with that group of people i told and we would go all around the world. that's how i'd want to go, with the people i love by my side.
(3)--i'd be terrified. but i'd get over it. i've got God on my side, and He'll be waiting for me on the other side.
5. You can have ONE of the following two things: trust/love. Which do you choose?
this question is an oxymoron.
1 Corinthians 13:7--"It [love] always trusts"
6. You are walking down the street on your way to work. There is a dog drowning in the canal on the side of the street. Your boss has told you if you are late one more time you get fired. Do you save the dog?
hmm. i think i would save the dog, because its a living creature. i would treat it just as if a person was drowning in the canal. as for my boss, well, if he really is that heartless enough to fire me for rescuing a dog, then i dont think i should work for him anyways.
7. You have just found out your boyfriend/girlfriend has cheated on you. What would you do?
i'd be done with them. plain and simple.
wow. eight's gone. and its not my fault.
9. Think of the last person who you know that died. You have the chance to give them 1 hour of life back, but you have to give one year of your life. Do you do it?
honestly? no. if a person dies and goes to Heaven, bringing them back to Earth would be like punishment.
10. Are you the kind of friend that you would want to have as a friend?
you know, i'm not quite sure. i freeload, i forget, i can be unreliable. many people get annoyed by me. but you tell me. if i've been a good friend to you, let me know. or let me know what i'm doing wrong. maybe i can fix it.
crap, i deleted 11. and i really dont wanna go back and find it.
12. Your boss tells your co-worker that they have to let them go because of work shortage, and they are the newest employee. You have been there much longer. Your co-worker has a family to support and no other means of income. Do you go to your boss and offer to leave the company?
Well, the first thing i'd to is pray. then i'd probably offer to leave, because if ive been there for a while i could probably get another job. and who knows, maybe the boss will get moved if i were to offer that and maybe he'd keep us both.
13. When was the last time you told someone HONESTLY how you feel?
i dunno. i honestly don't know myself how i "honestly" feel.
14. What would be harder for you, to tell someone you love them or that you do not love them back?
well, right now the first one's proving quite hard.
15. What do you think would be the hardest thing for you to give up? Why would it be hard to lose?
i would have to say giving up my friends would be the hardest. i know that wouldnt be an option, but it would kill me if it had to happen. right now i have the best group of friends ive ever had. EVER. i would give all my stuff up because i know my friends would have my back if i did. i love them all.
16. Excluding family love, when was the last time you told someone you loved them?
i don't know. :/
17. If you had to go back in time and change one thing, if you HAD to, even if you have "no regrets" what would you change?
i couldnt change anything.
18. Imagine. It is a dark night, you are alone, it is raining outside, you hear someone walking around outside your window. WHO do you wish was there with you?
my bestest friend amie.
19. Would you give a homeless person CPR if they were dying?
of course.
20. You are holding onto your grandmother's hand and the hand of a newborn that you do not know as they hang over the edge of a cliff. You have to let one go to save the other which one would it be?
wow. scary, cause my grandma actually works with newborns. id say id have to let go of the newborn, though, because i know the baby would be going to Heaven because newborns havent had the chance to sin yet. and my grandma's always been there for me.
21. Are you old fashioned?
no. not at all. no.
22. Which would you choose, true love with a guarantee of a heart break or have never loved before?
another oxymoron. | | |

| new devotional//week 1-John the baptisti joined a new Bible study group last night. it's basically 6 weeks of the new testament. in a nutshell, the new testament is all the stuff that happened from right before Jesus' birth until the ascension, where he went back to Heaven. Throw in a baker's dozen of letters from paul to churches and a few other letters from James and John and you have the New Testament. Wayy shorter and easier than the old testament.
Anyways, for the first week we talked about John the Baptist.
(Luke 3:1-20 NIV) John the Baptist Prepares the Way
(1)In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— (2)during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the desert. (3)He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. (4)As is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:
"A voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. (5)Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. (6)And all mankind will see God's salvation.' "
(7)John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? (8)Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. (9)The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."
(10)"What should we do then?" the crowd asked.
(11)John answered, "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same."
(12)Tax collectors also came to be baptized. "Teacher," they asked, "what should we do?"
(13)"Don't collect any more than you are required to," he told them.
(14)Then some soldiers asked him, "And what should we do?" He replied, "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely—be content with your pay."
(15)The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ. (16)John answered them all, "I baptize you with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. (17)His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire." (18)And with many other words John exhorted the people and preached the good news to them.
(19)But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch because of Herodias, his brother's wife, and all the other evil things he had done, (20)Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.
Okay, to understand this a little better, it might help to know who John the Baptist was.
Some basic facts: -He was born in 7 BC to Zechariah and Elizabeth (any significance? well, the fact that Elizabeth was the sister of Mary would make Jesus and John cousins. And Elizabeth was incredibly old and couldn't have kids anymore, but she happened to have John.) -He grew up in the wilderness, eating creepy things such as locusts and stuff. -Around 27 AD, God called to him and he very rapidly gained widespread fame as a preacher who called for all the nations to repent for their sins. -He was known to baptize people in the Jordan River, which is some famous river over in the Middle East.
Above all that however, comes one point. John was the forerunner to Christ, and the promised Elijah from Malachi 4:5 (See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes.)
That Elijah was John. He came and paved the way for Jesus and His ministry. That is, until King Herod had him beheaded (a great story, but for another day).
Alright, now for the three-part journaling process.
A) Some things that stuck out in the text:
-Verses 8 & 9: Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.
Okay, this must have come as a big blow to the guys he was talking to. The majority of John's crowd were Pharisees, who I like to think of as the Jewish Church's Police Force. These were guys who were so skilled in the Old Testament that they thought they knew everything. Above all that, they believed that if they follow those laws in the old testament then they were above everybody else, and they used this as their grounds to do pretty much whatever they wanted.
Which is where the whole "We have Abraham as our father" thing comes into play. When John says "Out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham" it stings. Think about it. Rocks are some of the most useless things around. Rocks can't serve God's kingdom and live out His plan. But John is saying that the rocks are equally standing with them there. The Pharisees were using Abraham as an excuse. What they didn't realize is that their faith was so spiritually dead that it meant nothing.
-Verse 16b: He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
Basically, John knew he wasn't the Christ and that he was only paving the way.
B) Directive statements to the people
-To the crowds: "Produce fruit in keeping with repentance" (Verse 8) Again with the rocks thing. He's telling them to live their life in a way that pleases God and not to be dead in their faith.
-To the crowds: "The man with two tunics should share with him who has none, and the one who has food should do the same." (Verse 11) This one is plain and simple: Give!! God loves when you help those in need.
-To the tax collectors: "Don't collect any more than you are required to" (Verse 13) This is another stinger. Tax collectors were not the most honest people back then. John told them basically to be fair, don't steal or cheat just because you can.
-To the soldiers: "Don't extort money and don't accuse people falsely—be content with your pay." (Verse 14b) Basically, don't steal/lie/cheat/complain. Be happy with your life and the fact that you actually have a paying job when some don't have anything!
And lastly,
C) Reactions to John's teachings
-Powerful: Many people came to repentance and were baptized by John and believed that their Messiah couldn't be too far away at this point.
-Controversial: John said some pretty tough things to some people who weren't open to hearing tough things. Their reaction: He was thrown in prison and, upon command of the King's daughter, was beheaded and had his head given to her on a platter. | | |
| end-of-year 9 people.1) okay, so it's been awesome getting more chances to hang out with your mexican self. we've had fun and we've had some laughs, even if you didn't buy my iPod :P
2) you became an amazing friend to me this year. i have gone to you just about every time something's gone wrong, and whenever i haven't you saw right through me and called me on it. i know God placed you in my life for a reason, and that reason is to be a brother in my life, to laugh with me and to help me through stuff. i will be with you next year for your last year at fuge, don't worry.
3) i will be honest. you're an awesome guy, you just bug sometime. i like doing things on my own terms, not cause i'm being forced, thank you very much.
4) you're amazing. end of story. well, not quite, cause i'm still talking. it has been the best experience in the world getting to become this close to you. i would never trade it for anything. just being with you or even talking to you makes my day, my week even. we have similar tastes in like, everything. you can make me laugh no matter what mood i'm in, no matter what crap i'm going through. and when i don't need a laugh, you're there with a hug, or just to listen, or to talk some sense into me. there's so much more that i just can't quite say, but i hope i can soon. you don't even understand. thank you for being amazing. i love you.
5) it sucks that we never ever get to see each other, because you rock. you and i have some of the most amazing conversations. i trust you a lot. i'm happy you guys are so great together. you need to come to east because you rock so much. hopefully since it's summer we'll get to hang out some more.
6) i must admit, it took me a while to warm up to you. and i'm pretty sure you can guess why. but, you've turned out to be a pretty cool guy. i may not totally trust you, but that's understandable. you're still a fun guy. you make thursdays and sundays fun. and i can have a pretty good conversation with you if i want to. you draw awesome, and you drum even awesomer. seriously, you're like wicked. haha. i've heard from people that me and my best buddy have become great friends of yours, and i find that flattering. thanks.
7) and now for that best buddy i just mentioned. four years we've lived through. what a trip. i've seen good sides, bad sides (rarely) and everything in between. if we had a penny for each of our good ideas we'd have only one penny to fund each idea and boy would they turn out lame. thirty years later, dudes in trees, tekno songs, guitar songs, gender-confused fish, rockumentaries; we've done it all, albeit usually without finishing any of them. one of these days that will change, and those amazing ideas will all be done and amazing. until then, we'll hang in there for many, many years laughing and thinking and fighting and rocking and rolling and laughing some more. and when that ends, we'll do it all over again for eternity in Heaven.
8) you've made me a bit discouraged. disappointed, even. we were such great friends and it fell apart. the worst part about it was that i don't even understand why. we would talk every chance we got. this year, i was lucky if i even got to see you at all. i hate it. you were one of my best friends. i tried whenever i could to fix things, but it's hard to fix something when you don't even know how it's broken, what to fix, or why i should bother. apparently it didn't mean that much or it wouldn't have broken that easily. but do know that while the door may seem closed, it's never ever locked and the welcome sign will never come down.
9) i really want to thank you for making this such an amazing year. we've had some of the best times. i really don't think you know how much i appreciate your friendship. you've got your problems, but don't we all? from panda at fresno state to ordering pizza in acadec and making mr leslie pay for it, we've done it all :) please do me a favor and never, ever, ever leave me. because you're amazing and i love you. | | |
| 5/1 (Mat 4:27)well. i'm back to blogging. hopefully i can make this a daily thing. or at least, a semi-daily thing.
i guess the whole point of it is that my head is too clogged. i mean, i have of course all of my miscellaneous personal thoughts, introspections, and ideas, and all the drama i help my friends deal with. plus church work, homework, and other things. which leads me to want to take the easy way out. and a lot of times, i hate to admit it, i end up cutting the wrong things out of the picture. even God sometimes, sadly.
Like the last devotional we had. sure i read one of the passages on like, the first day, but i ended up giving it NO thought or consideration cause of how busy i was (or thought i was). Strangely enough, today, i thought of ONE verse a couple times today.
"Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash." (Matthew 7:24-27 NIV)
(hmm. there's a lot of big words here. well not really, but still. here's a slightly better translation of it:)
"These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on. If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit—but nothing moved that house. It was fixed to the rock.
"But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don't work them into your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who built his house on the sandy beach. When a storm rolled in and the waves came up, it collapsed like a house of cards." (Matthew 7:24-27 MSG)
(wow. a Bible translation that uses the word "stupid" in it. an indication that we will eventually see the "urban-ghetto Bible" sometime soon. Maybe.)
Okay, my rambling aside, that verse speaks to me. Especially the second translation. Too often we see things like Bible verses and stuff when we're in Sunday services or youth group and then thats it. its gone. forever. it cant work that way. otherwise, the Bible is just one of those books you read when you're bored, like the magazines from the 1500s in the doctors' offices.
dont worry. i wont be going on long winded religious ramblings in blogs i do. i just had to throw that out there. its just been something ive been thinking about and if i didnt put it out my mind would be too clogged.
okay, i'm done. lemme just leave with one more cool story i found:
Early the next morning Jesus was returning to the city. He was hungry. Seeing a lone fig tree alongside the road, he approached it anticipating a breakfast of figs. When he got to the tree, there was nothing but fig leaves. He said, "No more figs from this tree—ever!" The fig tree withered on the spot, a dry stick. The disciples saw it happen. They rubbed their eyes, saying, "Did we really see this? A leafy tree one minute, a dry stick the next?"
But Jesus was matter-of-fact: "Yes—and if you embrace this kingdom life and don't doubt God, you'll not only do minor feats like I did to the fig tree, but also triumph over huge obstacles. This mountain, for instance, you'll tell, 'Go jump in the lake,' and it will jump. Absolutely everything, ranging from small to large, as you make it a part of your believing prayer, gets included as you lay hold of God." (Matthew 21:18-22 MSG)
----cool. we can tell mountains to jump in lakes. fun. here's the main point, though:
"You can pray for anything, and if you have faith, you will receive it." (Matthew 21:22 NLT)
----knowing that, i think im done here.
-Daniel.
